Description
Description
BMP-8, also known as osteogenic protein 2 (OP2), is a member of the Bone Morphogenetic Protein (BMPs) family, which is important for the development of bone and cartilage. BMPs belong to the TGF-β superfamily of structurally related signaling proteins. BMP proteins are synthesized as large precursor molecules that are cleaved by proteolytic enzymes. The active form of BMPs can consist of a dimer of two identical proteins or a heterodimer of two related bone morphogenetic proteins. BMPs signal through type I and type II receptor tyrosine kinases and signal through SMAD proteins.
BMP‑8a is synthesized as a large precursor protein that is cleaved at a dibasic cleavage site (RTPR) between aa residues 263 and 264 to release a 139 aa carboxy‑terminal domain. Expression patterns of the BMP-8 genes indicate that they regulate aspects of cell proliferation and/or differentiation during spermatogenesis and formation of the placenta. BMP-8 is also highly expressed in osteosarcomas.
