Description
BMP-9, also known as growth and differentiation factor 2 (GDF-2), is a member of the Bone Morphogenetic Protein (BMPs) family, which is important for the development of bone and cartilage. BMPs belong to the TGF-β superfamily of structurally related signaling proteins. BMP proteins are synthesized as large precursor molecules that are cleaved by proteolytic enzymes. The active form of BMPs can consist of a dimer of two identical proteins or a heterodimer of two related bone morphogenetic proteins. BMPs signal through type I and type II receptor tyrosine kinases and signal through SMAD proteins.
BMP-9 is expressed mainly in non-parenchymal cells of the liver, but is also found in other various cells and tissues. BMP-9 can signal through the ALK1 receptor and has been implicated in a number of physiologic events. These include regulation of the hepatic reticulo-endothelial system, glucose homeostasis, and iron homeostasis, as well as the inhibition of angiogenesis.
